Genomic and niche divergence in an Amazonian palm species complex

چکیده

Abstract Environmental heterogeneity across the landscape can cause lineage divergence and speciation. The Geonoma macrostachys (Arecaceae) species complex has been proposed as a candidate case of ecological speciation in Amazonia due to evidence habitat partitioning pre-zygotic reproductive barriers between co-occurring morphotypes at local scale. In this study, we provide continent-wide perspective patterns G. by integrating data from morphological traits, target sequence capture, climate, soil biology. A morphometric analysis revealed four morphogroups, defined traits related leaf shape. coalescence-based phylogenetic did not recover morphogroups monophyletic, indicating independent evolution shape geographical space. We demonstrate scale-dependent differentiation for two which segregation driven mostly climate was complete regional scale but incomplete continental Contrary previous isolation form different pollinators flowering times sympatric forms Peru Ecuador, these were found Colombia, suggesting have evolved multiple its range. Taken together, our findings suggest that adaptation is driving diversification macrostachys, hyperdiverse regions such are probable arenas sympatry.

Ancient polymorphisms and divergence hitchhiking contribute to genomic islands of divergence within a poplar species complex

How genome divergence eventually leads to speciation is a topic of prime evolutionary interest. Genomic islands of elevated divergence are frequently reported between diverging lineages, and their size is expected to increase with time and gene flow under the speciation-with-gene-flow model. However, such islands can also result from divergent sorting of ancient polymorphisms, recent ecological...

The influence of geographic heterogeneity in predation pressure on sexual signal divergence in an Amazonian frog species complex.

Sexual selection plays an important role in mating signal divergence, but geographic variation in ecological factors can also contribute to divergent signal evolution. We tested the hypothesis that geographic heterogeneity in predation causes divergent selection on advertisement call complexity within the Engystomops petersi (previously Physalaemus petersi) frog species complex. We conducted pr...

Niche divergence builds the case for ecological speciation in skinks of the Plestiodon skiltonianus species complex

Adaptation to different thermal environments has the potential to cause evolutionary changes that are sufficient to drive ecological speciation. Here, we examine whether climate-based niche divergence in lizards of the Plestiodon skiltonianus species complex is consistent with the outcomes of such a process. Previous work on this group shows that a mechanical sexual barrier has evolved between ...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi promote coexistence and niche divergence of sympatric palm species on a remote oceanic island

Microbes can have profound effects on their hosts, driving natural selection, promoting speciation and determining species distributions. However, soil-dwelling microbes are rarely investigated as drivers of evolutionary change in plants. We used metabarcoding and experimental manipulation of soil microbiomes to investigate the impact of soil and root microbes in a well-known case of sympatric ...
